I doubt it. The cable itself has quite a bit of inertia. If the speedo
siezed, the spinning cable would sheer whatever had siezed as opposed to
visa-versa.
My experience has been that when a cable breaks it's because of a defect
(cable pinched, the sheath is rubbing the cable... something like that).
You also have to make sure that the cable routing is done so that it
doesn't make corners too tight.
If the spinning metal core touches the same spot on the sheath for any
length of time, the result will be that the cable and'or sheath will get
hot and this results quite frequently in a broken cable.
I'd be looking for a kink or no lube in the sheath.
