Ken---Whatever caused the distributor to "rotate CCW" could still be
at the root of your "new" problem. Things like this can happen if and
when the rotor slides up the dist. shaft and wedges against the cap
towers. Usually it will just destroy the rotor, and possibly some of the
cap towers, but since you replaced these something else is obviously
wrong.

There's nothing wrong with setting the dist. timing at 10 deg. BTDC with
the engine idling at 900, as you wrote. No centrifugal advance should
come into play at this rpm. Re-confirm that this is the timing, and then
see if it advances as you speed up the engine.
The retard mechanism, if still connected, should be out of the picture
during the speed-up test. It should play no part in your misfires.

Backfiring can be caused by at least two things...engine out of time,
and/or frequent no-spark occuring which can load up the exhaust system
with raw fuel. Then bang.

Having to "use the CHOKE" to keep the engine idling could just be
another way of speeding up the engine, by adding in timing advance.
If you blew out part of a manifold gasket thru backfiring, you could now
have an air leak. (Lean mix)

Check again the position of the nylon insulater on the points post,
which is a good source of trouble for what you describe. This can be
checked with a test light at the wire going from the dist. to the coil
(-) post. With this wire disconnected from the coil and connected to the
light, the light it should "flash" steadily each time the points
open/close, using the starter motor to crank the engine.

Comrades,
Recently had the unfortunate occurrence where the dizzy revolved approx.
45 degrees ccw
when cruisin the local interstate. The vaccuum retard unit prevented it
from turning further ccw when it butted up against the block. Replaced
the points/condenser/rotor/cap/wires and spark plugs and re-timed engine
to
10 degrees BTDC @ approx. 900RPM (w/vacuum retard unit disconnected and
plugged) but engine still will not idle or accelerate smoothly. Have
very noticeable stumble upon acceleration with backfiring with 'popping
' sounds coming from exhaust on deceleration. Also need choke out to
maintain idle speed.
Any chance I caused engine or vacuum retard unit damage when the dizzy
revolved ccw?
Any and all opinions are definitely welcome.
