Some folks asked that I post my solution to the "utility box for the wasted
space in the engine compartment above the passenger foot well" question I
posed a couple of months ago. Here are pics of the prototype:

It's made out of stuff I had lying (laying?) around: 1/4" plywood, 1/8"
aluminum trim, and ribbed-vinyl floor mat. (Yeah, I know making it out of
wood is Morganic, but I never took metal shop... either.) I use it for
tools, spares, and first-aid stuff. (I was talked out of using it to store
spare ammo.)
Here's a detail of the spare oil bottle holder I made from galvanized rod
(although it doesn't have enough miles on it, yet, to assure that the bottle
won't melt eventually). A flashlight is stowed against the firewall in the
space behind the oil bottle, out of the way of the hood-latch safety catch.

The shelf over the battery is made of the same materials, supported by 1x2s,
and jammed in place by the battery hold-down bracket. I'll hinge it to the
firewall eventually. Mainly, I wanted a place to lay tools without their
rolling off into the oil puddle under the car or onto the battery terminals.
