Mark---Just about any stock TR six should be capable of exceeding 100
mph. On your '74 that's 4850 rpm, figuring the stock gearing for
carbureted cars, or 20.6 mph per 1000 rpm. It is a rare, stock TR indeed
that will see redline (5800) in 4th gear, on a level road, no tailwind,
stock diam. tires, top & windows up, etc. This puts the speed a tick
under 120 mph.
There's a lot of things you can check to see why your's is not going
over 80.
Ignition timing should reach 30 deg. BTDC or more at 3,000 rpm.
Compression should check out in the 120 psi range.
The engine should not misfire.
Air and fuel filters should flow well.
The valves should open close to .340 for proper breathing.
The Island Police should be nowhere in sight.
