Greg,
thanks for all the info - it'll make for some interesting reading.  I am 
running twin SU with matched needles, 9.5:1+ compression, fast road cam, engine 
balanced with mechanical fan removed (utilizing an electric fan), msd ignition 
with plugs gapped to .035, so I think playing with the advance may be well 
suited to my engine.  May do nothing...may do something, time and a little 
experimentation will tell.
