Here are the answers that I am familiar with.
Overdrive questions
I have the J type on my 73 and If you plan on doing highway driving I highly
recommend it. Check the archives for OD information there have been
several threads on this topic. The A type was provided on the earlier cars.
Your frame will have the mounting tabs for the Overdrive that was supplied
with your car although there are kits and patterns to make adapters to fit
earlier odrvies to later cars and vice-versa. The differences are:
A type can be used in 2-4 gear, J type 3 & 4 only Engaging the OD in a lower
gear or reverse will have disasterous results.
A type 2 cutout switches on top cover J type 1 switch
The solenoids differ between the two.
To add an overdrive to a No OD tranny you must:
Change the Tranny output shaft
Add a right angle tach cable adapter
Tap the tranny top cover for cutout switches.
Install wire a switch and electric for the solenoid.
Engine compartment
A black engine compartment was someines idea of tidying things up. The cars
came with the engine compartment painted boy color. Check for rust on
battery tray from battery acid corrosion and around clutch and brake
cylinders from leaking brake fluid. The paint codes are located on a tag on
the drivers door frame. You can find paint code legends on the web at the
VTR site.
I think the need for AC would depend on where you live and how oten you plan
on using your car. Here in the northeast sunny days mean top down. I doubt
the AC would help much in this circumstance. I have never had AC and rarely
felt the need for it. If I lived in the south I would be singing a
different song.
