Hi Doug,

I wouldn't be intimidated by removal of the speedo. It's a 10 minute job
(well ok, maybe the second time around). Follow the manual and you should
have it done in less than 1/2 hour the first time. You might find it helpful
to remove the driver's seat the first time you do it (two bolts), that way
you can lie comfortably on your back and look up to see everything under the
dash as you remove the speedo. If you do remove the seat (highly
recommended) make sure to have foam pad to put on top of the seat slider
which will remain on your floor.

>From memory, it's:

- two knurled nuts (one of which attaches the ground wire, undo these by
hand)
- four bulb holders (two for illumination, two for the high beam & turn
signal indicator "jewel" things, the bulb holders just pop out with a gentle
pry from a thin bladed screw driver)
- two wires attached to the voltage regulator (which have male/female spade
connectors you cannot reverse upon reassembly)
- the speedo cable (large knurled nut in the center, undo this by hand)
- the plastic nut securing the trip meter reset cable to the dash (undo by
hand)

I think that's it, it really is not that complex once you peer underneath
and see for yourself. Once you have it on the bench, you can determine what
the problem with the reset mechanism is. Possibly a loosely inserted reset
cable.

Good luck!
