Al,
I once had to have this done on my 250 in the late 70's courtesy of a nasty
potholed road I had to travel everyday when the TR was my daily driver on
Long Island. It cost the town (not me after my attorney sent a letter!)
about $200 labor and took about a half day. According to the BL TR6 Repair
Times book to remove and refit the diff is 2.1 hours. Then add welding
charges (how that is done, I never could figure out - weld inches? time?
what the job is worth?!).
Recently when I had the chassis dipped and powdercoated during the early
stages of its ongoing restoration the raceshop chassis guy next door
recommended that before coating I have "girdles" welded onto the two bridges
that hold the diff mounts . He said that even when there is no broken
mounting the bridges take a real beating at the weld holding the two large
pins and brackets, fatiguing the metal. For the $150 I agreed.
He fabricated two long steel channels that precisely straddle the top of
each bridge with holes for the protruding pins plus several more evenly
spaced holes. The steel is then welded in the holes and along the entire
edge of the girdle to the bridge.
Although this is something that can only be done with the body off of the
car it is something to consider for any TR owner if that opportunity ever
arises. If any lister would like to see a photo of what this looks like
just ask and I'll email it.
