Ken---Coming up out of an engine rebuild and finding the engine will not
start has to call for anxious moments. There are many possiblities, but
as always, let's look at the easy ones first.

If you are getting Any Spark, put the timing light on #1 plug wire and
have someone turn the key. See if the timing mark shows up anywhere
between 15 deg. BTDC and four deg. ATDC. This should be close enough to
eliminate the spark timing too far out of whack for a no-start.
Coils don't usually go bad sitting on the bench. Borrow one if
necessary.

Take the air filters off and give each carb a squirt of "starting
fluid". It is sold under several brand names at Auto Parts stores, but
it's basically ether. What we're trying to do here is see if it will
fire up, even for only a couple of seconds. If it does this, you can
figure the spark is "adequate" if not ideal.

Spark coming from a plug wire to ground when cranking the engine never
looks as strong as when testing with a running engine.

If you get a no-start, and no fire from either #1 or #6 plug wire, see
if you can get something out of the coil wire that goes to the dist.
cap. You can use the timing light for this check, or ground the wire
close to the valve cover, etc.

Other, a little more involved tests for a no-start could mean checking
such items as doing a compression reading, and cam timing.

Let's hope it's something a little easier on the nerves.

Dick
