Dave,
I have had exactly the same experience as you. I chased a "sputtering"
problem for the last two months because I have set my timing to 4deg
A.T.D.C. After carb adjustments, new points rotor, fuel filter etc. . . I
decided to just set the timing until it ran well. Guess what? when I check
it with a timing light it is advanced off scale. I don't understand why my
engine is so different than what has been documented.

Am I overlooking something or is there something that could possibly be
detrimental to have the timing so far in advance?
I have also done some testing in terms of adjusting the timing and checking
the temperature at idle. I hate it when the needle rises above halfway
(which on my car is 180). I have a summer thermostat in the car (165) and
when idling the needle now goes to just above halfway.
Sincerely,
Dave Herbert
