Geoff---This reply may be coming in late, but you can take out the
tranny from the inside, thru the passenger side door. (Use a thin sheet
of plywood to wedge under it, to act as a sled during removal. This will
help keep the interior clean during the process)
The driveshaft can stay in. Just push it back a little so the flanges
will clear each other. Supporting the tranny from underneath with a
floor jack will give some comfort as you wiggle it free from the clutch.

I can't pinpont the "pop" you hear when depressing the clutch pedal. For
sure, if you can't disengage the clutch you're not getting the full
forward movement of the t/o bearing and the parts that make this motion.
The usual suspect is a broken fork pin. Lots has been written about
this, so no need to repeat it here. A good source for information would
be the buckeyetriumphs.org
web site. Chances are good that when you remove the tranny and operate
these parts by hand, the reason will be apparant. If not, and you have
a copy of Roger Williams "Resto..." book, he refers to the "pipe test"
to find lost motion between the shaft and the fork.
