Ken---Oddly enough, the ring gear bevel faced the clutch side, as
delivered. I understand this was a carryover from when the starter
pinion actually engaged from this side on earlier TR's. The factory just
never changed the position of the ring gear's bevel after changing to
the new style starter.
To answer your question, the bevel will work from either side, but it
would seem more beneficial if it faced the starter pinion's bevel.
TRF will tell you that if you are going to replace the ring gear, to
reverse the direction of the bevel to face the pinion.
