Kangol seat belts

Hi everyone.  I want to replace the nylon belts on my kangol inertial 
reels and was wondering how get them off without that big coiled spring 
flying around the room.  Has anyone had these apart?   Im going to have 
a shop sew a new set but its pretty obvious they need to be sewn off the
