Jay,
I had the carbs rebuilt by Apple Hydraulics in March. The car was running
fine one day and "sputtering" the next.
I have checked timing, point gap, changed condenser, rebalanced and set idle
speed etc. . .
I am concerned because it is running rich and I can't lean out the carbs to
the point where the spark plugs aren't covered with soot. When I do set it
leaner the car runs even worse.
Maybe it's time for another set of eyes to look at things. . .

Hi Jim,
I've always checked valve clearances when cold.
Have you closely checked the diaphragmswith a light source?

Listers,
This has probably been beaten to death before, but do you adjust the valves
when the engine is hot or cold? I have seen it stated both ways in various
manuals.
Another question I have regards the carburetor temp compensators, is there a
quick on engine check that can be performed? None of the publications I
have read even begin to touch on the subject.
And yes, I am chasing some sort of engine sputtering demon that occurs at
~3000rpm.
Thanks,
