If you turn the screw clockwise fully, the needle will be drawn to the
maximum rich position about 2 mm above the bottom of the carb piston. Since
there is a blocking screw in the side of the piston you would tend to strip
the screw before spinning the needle carrier. If you turn the mixture screw
counter-clockwise too much the needle and its carrier will protrude from the
piston and get stuck down. I don't remember if you need to undo the blocking
screw to remove the needle carrier, but you can definitely unwind the
adjustment screw so far that it won't raise the needle again. This is simply
recified by feeling under the piston and pushing up on the carrier while
turning the mixture screw clockwise. The fully rich setting is approximately
2.5 turns above the point where the carrier is flush with the piston bottom.

Listers, thanks for your help but I have one other question due to my
concern over stripping the screw. Can the screw be turned so much that it
stops (like a normal screw)? Or will the needle just come out when turned
too much either way? What I'm trying to ask is can you strip the actual
screw from turning it too hard (assuming it bottoms out) or will the needle
just dislodge from the hole after it's turned too much either way? Thanks
again! Josh '76 TR6
