Hey Everyone,
Well, I actually had my '76 running on Friday night...not excellent pep,
but getting there...no missing, smooth steady idle, etc. Then I had to
go fooling with the mixture, which wasn't working because of problems
with worn o-rings on the adjuster screw and (it turns out) missing
retainer rings holding the adjuster screw into the air valve. Well, to
make a long story short, I fumbled an air valve, dropped it and snapped
off the needle. I stood there, in shock...and a chill went down my
spine...
So, I order 2 new needles (might as well replace them in pairs so
they'll wear evenly...new o-rings on the other adjuster screw, too...)
from Joe Curto, and put them in tonight.
Started out full rich, and then backed both carbs off 1 turn. But, I
couldn't get her to idle at 900 RPM. I tried to force it w/ the idle
screw, and it would run faster for awhile...then die.
So, I've only messed with the idle screws, and put in new needles, but
if I can't achieve a steady 900 RPM idle, I can't do the other
adjustments, or check timing, etc. I feel like I'm in a catch-22 black
hole...and can't find my way out...
I have been studying the Haynes Stromberg manual, and Bentley, and lots
of good info from Dick and Bob and the Buckeye Triumph Club tech page,
but all seems to be for naught.
Now, I should know better than to ask this, but...is it REASONABLE to
expect that the problem lies with the only 2 things I've messed with
(mixture and idle), considering it was running OK before I trashed my
adjustable needles? Just trying to be optimistic, and also avoid a hefty
mechanics bill...
Pete
