Greetings list.
My TR250 engine and tranny were removed from the old chassis tonight. All
that's left on the old frame are the brake lines (for future reference when I
run new lines on the new frame). Not being able to resist getting to the next
goal of my project, I dove into the timing cover to replace a leaking front oil
seal. Everything was pretty uneventful until actually getting to the seal. It
was rock-hard and was very different from the replacement seal I have. The
seal in the cover now has a metal rim that pinches the front lip of the seal
against the inside of the timing cover. The new seal is rubber and appears to
simply press into the indention in the timing cover seal without the metal lip
present.
First, is the metal lip part of the seal to be removed from the timing cover?
Second, what is the recommended method for removing this type of seal if it is
to be removed? I'm a little confused and I've hit a wall on the way to
replacing this seal and the timing chain. Not sure when the timing
chain/sprockets went to double row, but at commission number CD6521L, it is
double row. I know someone with commission number at around CD3500L who had a
single row prior to changing it out. Any idea when the change took place?
All feedback is greatly appreciated!
Andy
