Crazy or not, John, that's the way I also remove the front springs.  So
long as there's (engine) weight on the springs, one can use a bottle
jack and a  piece of 2x4 cut to fit between the spring pan bolts. I
guess the liability issues for doing this 'wrong', along with trying to
remove these springs with no weight on them, is what prompts the use of
advising the spring compressors.
