Disc brake shims (anti squeal)

List,

 I've been looking at the disc brakes and the parts I've got for them, but
there are two types of shims one is metal and the other is a thin stick on
strip (pad). Which is the better one to use and keep those brakes from
squealing.
  I don't think the stick on pad would last too long, but the metal shim seems
like it would potentially squeal. Any ideas on this?
