Listers:
Thanks to all for your suggestions regarding my oil pressure light problem.
Basically, the green light was glowing despite the fact that the gauge showed
plenty of pressure.
I tried to solve the problem with 2 extra quarts of oil to no avail. I have
ordered a new dipstick, but I did figure out how to use my
pseudo-dipstick/oil temp sender aftermarket gizmo to read the oil level with
some degree of confidence. Surprise, surprise, it showed that my oil level
was 2 quarts high, so I let that oil drain out until I was back at the right
level in the crankcase.
When I ordered the dipstick from TRF, I also ordered a replacement one-prong
oil pressure switch. Interestingly, both were available used only, but the
guy from TRF said that he could find used units for me pretty soon. In the
mean time, I thought I might be able to fix or clean out the existing switch
(a la my recent clogged fuel injector experience). So I removed the switch,
stuck the straw from my WD 40 can into the inside, squirted some in under
pressure, and tapped it against the workbench a few times. Then I
reinstalled the switch. The light still glowed green for a minute or so,
then went back to functioning properly (green only at startup and shutdown).
I wish everything were this easy! Happy New Year to all.
