Both terminals on each side of the rheostat have two spade connectors, and
only one clip to each - so the easiest
way to test if its the rheostat at fault is to short it, by reaching up the
back of the dash,
unclipping one side and putting it on the other.

As it only ever gives a range from "dark" to "even darker" I decided to
leave mine like that.
