Dwayne:
Start by checking all front end components for wear. Things such as
trunnions, bushings, ball joints and tie rod ends could be worn or damaged.
If all that is in good shape, take the car to a tire shop and have the front
wheels aligned. If the steering wheel is off center, you'll have to undo it
and center it. You can do this down at the rack, where the steering linkage
connects.
If there is play in the steering wheel, probably the rubber bushings under
the metal mounts have "perished" as the English like to say. It is also
possible that no one ever lubed the steering rack all these years and that it
is worn internally.
