First of all, are you quite sure you don't have a reverse switch on the
gearbox cover? This sounds strange. The reverse switch should be at
the very LEFT side of the gearbox cover (when looking at the gearbox
from the driver seat). The 3rd/4th o/d switch will be in the middle of
the cover, and the 2nd gear o/d switch will be on the right side.
If you don't have a switch, you can remove the gearbox top cover and
drill and tap it to install a switch. My dad did this on his Stag so
that he could wire a switch to engage his J type overdrive on 2nd gear.
