Bob---A good place to go is measuring the wheel base on your car. Both
sides should be exactly 88 inches from the center of the front hub to
the center on the rear hub. The front wheels should be pointed straight
ahead for this check. An 'accomplice' is useful when doing this check.
It would help your cause if one side of the wheel base is the correct
88". Measure the shim pack, and you're likely to find four or five shims
on both sides of the bracket, when the WB is correct. Working with
(adding or subtracting) only the inside shim pack is recommended when
setting toe, so as to not upset the wheel base. Differences of more than
two shims between the left and right side wheels could have your car
"dog-tracking" down the road.
So far as "one tire sticking out farther than the other", on my car they
don't. Running with 205X70's, I can lay a straight edge against the top
and bottom of each tire and center of the fender lip and touch all three
points, when the car is at rest. The rear wheels have 1/2 deg. of
negative camber. There are a lot of factors that can influence this
measurement, tire pressures and load, for instance. The above is only
for reference to show that it's possible for wheels-to-body to at least
look correct.
