Darcy:

Here's what happened recently with my car. I ended up installing a
remanufactured distributor this week on my '69 TR6. It went downhill fast
from running well to having the same symptoms you describe. The plugs would
foul very quickly and, when checking the timing, was all over the scale. I
could not make adjustments at all, nor get the points gap to remain
constant. The engine was rebuilt just last fall. New plug wires, plugs,
etc.

You might want to check for excessive play in the distributor shaft.

My story ends: New distributor-no more problems! (till the next time, of
course)
