Hugh: I agree with Peter. I recently removed the motor for my engine bay rebuild. Dismantle the "flat" portion of the assembly (that part that houses the gears) by removing 4 screws and the cover. You'll see how the cable ends attaches. Once its removed, the cable end that protrudes from the recessed piece on the firewall can be extended or retracted by simply moving the wipers by hand.
