Drew,
I attended the Barber three day (racing)school at Lime Rock Park a couple of
years ago. It was a blast! Since then, I have attended a lapping day with
them, and also run a Porsche Club Driver's Ed event (I live near Dallas).
One of the other comments was right on, it depends on what you want to get out
of it. By completing the Barber School, you can obtain a Regional SCCA license
quicker (one school weekend vs. two). You'll also find that you will be
slotted higher in other DE events. (I slotted in an intermediate group with
PCA.)
Of course, it does come at a cost. A PCA DE or an SCCA school typically run
about $200 a weekend in TX. (Don't forget race car rental for an SCCA school,
about $1K for a spec miata rental here.) Compare this to about $2500 for
Skippy's three day course.
All in all, I think a good racing school is a great way to jump start
involvement, using someone else's equipment. You can also measure how much you
really want to get involved.... (It can get REALLY expensive).
Like I said earlier, I had a blast, learned a ton, and would do it again....
Good Luck,
Bill
