Dan,
The first possibility is that the float valve is stuck open, letting fuel
pour out of the overfilled bowl. If this is the case, you will be able to
see gas pumping out of the throat of the carb and it would also help
explain the poor running. If you still have the original fuel pump, you
can remove the airfilter assy, hand pump the fuel pump and watch for gas to
come out of the carb throat rather than starting the car up and running
it. Sometimes a few taps on the side of the bowl with the head of a
plastic screwdriver will help this temporarily. The other possibility is
the O-ring in the plug in the bottom of the float bowl.
While you're in the area, you should also check the rubber diaphragm around
the carb piston. Sounds like you might have had a backfire that messed
things up a bit.
