Hugh, this sounds like the male fitting for the tonneau hold down strap. The
OEM tonneau covers has a strap running from the passenger half of the front
part (the part which you can split by opening up the zipper, used when only
the driver is in the car and they want to keep the passenger side covered).
The strap helps keep the tonneau from flopping around at speed. The strap
has a female fitting which fits over the male fitting you described. I can't
recall the trade name of these fittings, I'm sure someone else will chime
in. I know it's not Dzus, but something like that...
