I redid the dash on my car a couple of years ago. I sanded all the old veneer 
off before applying the new veneer. As to the type of veneer, I went to a 
veneer warehouse in Cambridge Ontario where they had literally hundreds of 
different types of wood veneers. The sheets come in varying sizes but there 
were quite a few that were 2 ft by 4 ft in size. I chose a South American 
wood because the wood grain pattern was unique. I bought two pieces in case I 
screwed up on my first attempt.
I also purchased a book on how to veneer and went to work at it. One thing I 
did a little differently was to iron the veneer onto the dash. White glue and 
carpenters yellow glue are both thermo plastic glues, which means they will 
soften when heat is applied. I put an even coat of glue on both the veneer 
and the dash and allowed them to dry. You also have to spray water on the 
face side of the veneer as it will curl when it gets wet.
After the glue dried, I placed the veneer on the dash, put a towel over the 
veneer and ironed it. It takes a little while for the heat to penetrate, but 
it when on smoothly and without any bubbles or problems that can occur with 
trying to  clamp the two surfaces together.
The result was fabulous, especially for a first time effort. I still have the 
second piece of veneer.
It is really important to get all the old finish and veneer off the dash as 
the guages will not look right in the dash as the seem to be too far recessed 
and the glove box door will not close properly.
The cost of material was in the neighbourhood of $25.00 including the glue.

I hv pulled the instrument panel out and am very carefully sanding of the
old varnish off. the veneer appears to be mahogany.  several questions have
arisen

1) each instrument has a rubber ring, presumably as a shock mount. Moss does
not show these in their catalogue. 
   What kind of rings would I ask for at an auto parts or ??? store.

2) just at the top left corner of the glove box, there appears to be
something stamped in the wood..
   a serial number? a part number? an ad for laundry soap?? a shop floor
demand for more sugar in the tea?

3) I was considering the possibility of putting on a new veneer. Has anybody
tried this and what kinds of
   veneer did you use?
