Can I test for crankshaft end float with the engine in the car?

Richard---I didn't see this message before answering your other one. If
the engine has ran for 15,000 miles with only .001 clearance for crank
float I would be a little surprised, but not disbelieving!
Just be sure you're levering the crank back, then forth, and your dial
indicator is solidly placed. (.005 is a better end float)
