I fitted a Racetorations alloy sump in 1997. With no other modifications
to the cooling system, the car did run cooler. With the extra oil capacity
(I used Mobil 1 15w50 before and after, as synthetics handle the heat
better) and the cooling properties of the sump, I did not need to install a
fan or oil cooler to putter around town after a run on the highway on a hot
day (which had been the problem area...traffic jams on the highway were
touch and go). It looks cool and is well-made. I haven't bought any other
parts from them (I don't have a need..I have a race car to suck up extra
"car" cash), but I wouldn't hesitate to do so in the future based on my
experience.
My understanding is that all TR6s came with oil cooler mounting brackets in
front of the radiator, but no standard oil cooler here in the US. I think
I may have read that oil coolers were standard equipment on TR6s in some
markets..maybe South Africa or Germany (due to heat and/or sustained high
speeds)? I'm not 100% on that one.

Jerry,
Yes it was me. I have no test results to support the reduction in oil temp.
when using the finned alloy oil sump, but I do know that I have no heat
problems (I did before the change) and with the extra oil capacity, the oil
stays cleaner longer and the whole car seem to run cooler. For those with
more money then me, they even have a magnesium oil sump. The sump also
comes with a windage tray that is used to scrape oil from the crank and
improve power.
Kyle.

Upon sending a query to a member of 6pack (I think it was Kyle Rice) about
his performance mods, he suggested that the aluminum oil sump from
Racetorations was superior to an oil cooler, since it involves no external
plumbing that can leak. Since it's a finned alloy unit to dissipate heat and
has a big 8 quart capacity (and looks good, besides) , its cooling capactity
may exceed the oil cooler. It even has a no-tools oil drain feature. He also
uses a high capacity, alloy, Racetorations competition water pump with
sealed bearings.
