This is simple enough to correct.  As you have mentioned, and I have done
exactly that.  Simply wire in an additional relay, using your reverse lights
as a trigger to disengage OD.  This means as soon as you put the lever in
the reverse gate, OD will be disengaged... simple, inexpensive, and very
effective.
