Thanks to all for your comments and encouragement. Unless something
convinces me otherwise by tomorrow morning I'll definitely take the TR6.
Its in fine shape, I've done a complete frame-off restoration on the car
myself so I know the thing inside and out, I was just being a bit tentative
I guess. Only thing I'm a little worried about are U-Joints since I've
never replaced them. They don't make noise and seem tight but...I've never
messed with them.
Again, thanks to all for the responses. I'll pack my emergency repair kit,
toss a duffle bag of clothes in the trunk and head south tomorrow morning.
Here's hoping I get where I'm going :)

Phil---In 1983 I drove my '73 from L.A. to eastern Pennsylvania, down to
New Orleans, then westward again. A round trip total of 7500 miles in
less than a month. The engine at the time had 83,000 non-overhauled
miles on it before I left. Other than pouring in about 15 quarts of oil
along the way, the car ran without incident. I've made this trip twice
since. Can't say I didn't have moments where I was listening closely and
watching all of the gauges more frequently than I liked, but got where I
was going and had a blast doing it. I would take this car anywhere, and
still do so.
The 'tool pack' that James mentioned is a good idea. And a good service
manual stuffed somewhere in the trunk. Even if you aren't familiar with
its contents, a mechanic at a Chevron station could follow it. I'd say
DO IT.
