74 TR6 Fan Extension

I have installed an electric fan and now want to take off the original fan.
My question is, do you remove the fan extension and just bolt up the pulley
with no fan extension or do you need to leave the fan extension on the car?
It would seem that if you took the fan extension off, you would need to
shorten up the large bolt that holds it on.  Is there anything else I should
do or look out for.
