Brad - I'm one of those who just completed this chore using a hex bolt head to unscrew the fitting. Just put two nuts on a correct - size bolt, tigthen them together, turn the assembly upside-down and voila, you have a big Allen key. Use an ordinary wrench on the top nut to remove the fitting and the valve lifts right out (if you depress the piston a bit). When I screwed the plug back in I wrapped it with Teflon, just for fun.
