George----You're right, of course, about which way the engine idle goes
when the vacuum line is removed.  Well, at
least I got the first part right! (more or less) The vacuum retard on my
car only gives a 12 deg. swing, for some reason.  Thanks for keeping me
on my toes!

Dick,
Actually, if you disconnect the vacuum line which feeds the vac retard
 unit while the engine is idling, the idle speed will jump up in rpm 
(due to the sudden advance in timing) not slow down.  The vacuum unit 
on the six retards the timing when vacuum is applied.  Since the retard
unit has about a 14 degree range, setting the timing to 4 deg ATDC with
it connected is the same as setting it to about 10 degrees BTDC with it
disconnected.
