It's been many many years since I've had the head off my 6 and I can't remember where the stud threads are located relative to the top of the block - hopefully at the block surface. If you break a stud at the threads and they are down the stud hole ... the fun has just begun. Back toward the end of the last glacial period I was working at a dealership and had just purchased a spany new 61 TR3. I was retorquing the head and adjusting the valves (500 mile instection). I leaned on one of the studs toward the middle in an appempt to pull 110 lbs. with a short torque wrench and almost landed on my work bench. Stud was broken from the factory - 3+ inches down in the block. Gave a whole meaning to drilling and tapping. FWIW Bill |
