Short of replacing the top altogether, you may have already found the
best fix. Alternately, folks who specialize in upholstery and
convertible tops in your area may be able to sew in a new piece of clear
plastic for you.
Some of the new tops, like the ones shown in the TRF Winter Sale catalog
pages 86-87, are showing real glass for the Miata version. Also,
Prestige in the UK (see
http://www.prestigeautotrim.com/usa/pages/tr_home.htm ) has convertible
tops with a rear window made of what they call Flexglas. Their web page
says: "Industry leading Flexglas is used for rear windows which offers
superior UV resistance and longer life than standard clear plastic." So,
maybe there's hope on the horizon for better rear window materials so
this will be a problem of the past!
