These did exist, I remember the dealer having them in a showcase (yes,
back when the cars were in the showroom!), and I think AMCO also had
them. I wanted one but the cost was too high (around $90 in seventies
dollars, I think) as they were pretty flimsy. There was a built in
speaker grille, ahead of the armrest.
Quite the upgrade in sound at the time!
One of these popped up on e-bay several months ago, and wound up
selling for close to $400.

But it sure would be a nice feature, I could really use a nice
armrest. Plus I believe it had some storage in it and a cigarette
lighter (nice for using radar detectors and the like).
