Sal---These kinds clutch annoyances have come up before on the list, so
you may get different opinions as to the fix. Heres mine.
The rattle might be the throw-out bearing, but could be any loose or
broken part that is silenced by taking up the play when you step on the
clutch pedal. It's not necessarily cause for alarm, but it won't "get
better," till exposed and corrected.
The difficulty in engaging reverse gear is symptomatic of not enough
fluid being transferred from the clutch Master Cylinder to the slave.
95% of the time this can be corrected by taking the play out of the
pedal box linkage. Reach down with your hand to see if there's a lot of
lost motion before the clutch rod actually starts to feel resistance
from the M.C. The cure is replacing those parts that are causing the
"short stroke." You may also want to bleed the system to see if any air
is present, which can also cause the short-fall in clutch disengagement.
