I think my carbs are running a bit rich at idle. When idling, the
engine idle speed steadily drops until eventually the engine wants to
quit. It smells rich when idling, and I'm thinking that the plugs are
fouling and thus the engine tries to quit. Currently, I just blip the
throttle every 30 seconds or so, and everything is okay. The situation
is worse when it's hot out. I am going to hook my air/fuel ratio gauge
back up (thanks to Dick Taylor for his wiring suggestions) this
weekend, to double check that this is what is going on.
I have heard that when running a more aggressive cam, idle mixture
tends to be rich. Is this correct? I am running a Goodparts GP3 cam,
which is similar in profile to the factory S2 cam. I never had idle
problems last year, when running only two carbs with this setup. I now
have a 3 carb setup. I am thinking about using the idle mixture
adjustment screws on the carbs to correct this problem. Is this the
correct thing to do? Does anyone know exactly what these screws do and
how they are able to adjust idle mixture without affecting the mixture
at higher engine speeds? I am worried that once I start tinkering with
these screws, my problems will just get worse. I am always a bit
hesitant to mess with carb settings, because I've often heard stories
about someone who tried to make a few simple adjustments and ended up
with a car that wouldn't run. By the way, these carbs are freshly
rebuilt by Gary Martin.
Any advice and info would be much appreciated.
