Yes SU carbs can replace ZS but may not solve your problem.
You mentioned that you could rotate the distributor and stop the pinging but
it would return. Is the distributor slipping after you make the adjustment?

I would suggest that you check the timing when the engine isn't pinging and
when it starts again check the timing to see if it has changed. 

This problem seems more like a timing issue first and a carb issue second.
