This is the Swedish version of the car which is built at Holland's NedCar plant,
a joint venture from Volvo, Mitsubishi and the Dutch government.
The Mitsubishi Carisma debuted earlier this year and now here's the Volvo
version. This is the first car which moves away from the typical Volvo
naming syustem: from now on a letter will be used to show what is the character
of the car: S to denote saloon, F for flexibility (estates and five doors)
and C for coupe and cabrios. The numbers denote the class of model.
The S4 shares only one exterior panel with the Carisma: the windshield. Yet
from the floorpan to the inner panels everything shows a certaing degree of
Carisma.
The petrol engines are new 1.8 and 2-litre units, while the 1.9-litre td
engine were carried over from the 400 series.
This car is the first brand-new Volvo since the 850. Think about it like the
cousin of the 850.
For 1996 the 850 T-5R will be replaced by the 850R: shorter name, faster car!
With the five-cylinder 2319 cc engine which pumps out 250 bhp with manual and 240 hp
with automatic gearbox the 850R reaches 100 km/h from standing within 6.7 secs (manual),
7.5 secs (automatic).
