Ford is trying to go on its on way. First there is the radical lookin' Scorpio
(uhm...) and now the Fiesta.
I would not call it brand-new, rather a revised version. The rear almost
remained untouched. But the front... At Frankfurt not only the Fiesta had
new nose, but there were similar Mondeos, Escorts etc. For cryin' out loud,
I don't like this style.
The old Fiesta had safety structure improvements in 1994 so there was a need
for a restyling because its nose is 80 mm (about three inches) longer to
improve crushability in crashes. Ford claims that every exterior panel is
changed.
Now You can see everything... Here's another car with closed bonnet
The new Fiesta is the first Ford powered by the new Zetec-SE engine range:
1.25i 16v (37 kW/50 HP), 1.3 (44kW/60 HP) and the 1.8 litre diesel (44 kW/
60 HP). Combine this with the improved CTX automatic transmission and You'll
get very good fuel consumption (according to Ford).
The smallest engine has a maximum torque of 100 Nm at an engine speed of only
2200 rpm. (the max. power is reached at 4400 rpm). At least 90 % of this
torque is available between 1500 and 3500 rpm. Ford is the first manufacturer
worldwide to use magnesium as the material for a crankcase.
The car just got bigger: l/w/h: 3828/1634/1320 mm, wheelbase: 2446 mm.
Old model: l/w/h: 3744/1606/1376 mm, wheelbase was the same. Weight was
845-1020 kg, now 949-1050 kg.
The trend of packing small cars with lots of options at base price holds still:
driver's airbag, power steering, sunroof, engine immobiliser, anti-submarining
front buckets from the Escort with "pyrotechnic' pretensioners.
Lincoln L2K
It's a two-seater roadster, the American Mercedes SLK. Projected price is
$40.000.
