This year, for the first time at a motor show, Rover and BMW shared the same
stand. So this car was exhibited from a few metres of 5-series BMWs...
As the sales of the 5-door version are below the expectations Rover
introduced the car in Frankfurt, not in London as originally planned.
There's an additional extra 175 mm behind the C-pillar to take the overall
length to 4419 mm. The boot capacity is 480 litres (20 litres less than the
new Vauxhall/Opel Vectra).
Sales will start next Spring with a choice of four engines: 1.6 litre K-series,
2.0 litre T-series petrol and two versions of Rover's new 2.0 litre L-series
diesel engine.
The 82 kW (111 HP) 1.6 litre K-series was first introuduced together with a
smaller 1.4 litre version in the five-door 400 in May, and heralded the
expansion of the growing K-series family.
The T-series 2.0 litre power unit has been modified to meet the forthcoming
'ECD2' emissions legislation. Max. power output is 100 kW (136 HP) @ 6000 rpm.
The L-series 2.0 litre turbo-charged diesel engine is introduced in Rover 400
in two vesions: a new mechanically controlled direct injection power unit
producing 63 kW (86 HP) @ 4500 rpm and the elctronically controlled and
intercooled direct injection power unit, currently available in the Rover 600
diesel, producing 77 kW( 105 HP) @ 4200 rpm.
