Subject: [TR] Interior Leather Touch up
I have the red leather interior and capping from TRF. I have a couple of
scuffs that need to have the color touched up. Does anyone have a source
for the correct color of dye to make this touch up? TRF says they do not
have anything.
Thx,

I have often wondered why the TR3 cooling system only has a 4lb pressure
cap. My friend with a 1962 Morgan(TR3 engine) and I both experience a
modest amount of overflow after only 20-30 minutes of driving. I try to
keep the coolant level at about 1/2 the depth of the extension neck as I
have never heard any definitive data on just where the line should be as
there is no overflow recovery system for this car.
Does everyone have this issue? My engine and radiator are only 3000 miles
old after a good cleaning during the re-build, I also have the 6-blade TR

I fill to a 1/4" or maybe a bit less in the neck. Anymore and it will puke.
So I would say yours is normal & self-correcting.

I believe that is because the original thermostat was an "aneroid" type,
where the pressure inside the bellows opposes the pressure outside the
bellows to determine the thermostat position. As the pressure outside the
thermostat rises, it takes a higher temperature to open the thermostat. At
any rate, my TR3 seems to do just fine with a 10 lb cap and a modern "wax
pellet" thermostat.
> I have never heard any definitive data on just where the line should be
The "definitive data" IMO is how much it will hold without losing through
the overflow, under all operating conditions. As you have seen, and others
reported, halfway is too much (even though I believe it is documented that
way on page 13 of Practical Hints 6th ed).
Of course it is possible you have some other issue, like perhaps a tiny
headgasket leak. BTDT But I think you'll find that, if you leave it alone,
the water level will go down a bit and no more.

Another consideration is the ability/design of components such as the heater core.
On the Sunbeam Tiger, a lot of heater cores are "pooched" out because the design pressure limit has been exceeded by guys seeking boilover protection by going to 15 psi caps.
The 4 psi cap works as designed, allowing the expansion tank built on to function pre design.
The aneroid t stat is no doubt one of those components.
Just saying....

That long square thing is the expansion tank.
As long as the tubes in the radiator are kept covered by the coolant media, your cooling system is working as designed.
On my early Spit, the tank is separate....just a design difference.
My Lotus has a tiny tank back in the engine compartment, since the radiator is in the nose, mounted flat.
All designs are as they are just to keep the radiator tubes covered. Having excess coolant does nothing for you.
There's a aluminum duplicate of the stock unit with an electric fan mounted along with the electrical bits on the internet at a reasonable price.
Might be worthwhile.

Hi,
I wanted to post the time for reference along with a link to the results,
but for reasons unknown, the results seem to have dissapeared from the
site where they had been posted.
FWIW, I won the class, but I was the only entrant. The car also ran with
two drivers in D mod and I covered the D mod field too. I beat the guy who
has been driving the car to years by about 4 seconds over two days.
Not bad considering that I'd never sat in the car before.
Hi Marty!
Check out some of the other vids that I've posted. I'm not usually that
smooth but I do know how to find the limit. Even beyond the limit on
occasion.

Mine were done at TRF and they turned out great.
The turn around time was a little slow, but I'm told that they have improved that.
I don't think there are any way you can get them done much cheaper unless you find someone who does it for a hobby.

Personally, I'd still go with epoxy, Permatex and others have suitable epoxies
for fixing it. I've used epoxy on a couple of engines with no problems (yet).
I know people love Hylomar, but I would not use it for this purpose - it is
good because it doesn't harden which allows pretty easy disassembly - the cam
plug is not something you expect to remove anyway though.

I have heard good things about their rebuilding, but have not tried them.Make
sure any adjustions, i.e. bending, needed to make them fit your car are done
before you send them to TRF.

Did you ever try to bend those attachment arms? They are beyond my
level of strength and technology. Which is why my side screens are
never on my car.

Better than mine. When I removed them the arm would not stay up in the
neutral position. They just flopped to where gravity sent them. I had
mine rebuilt at Apply Hydraulics with heavy duty valving while I worked
on the rest of the car.

The secret is leverage.
"Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the Earth
with a lever" -
Archimedes
Wouldn't disagree with Archimedes at all - and a
good many at Standard-Triumph's Body Plant in days gone by swore by those
words as well. Not necessarily moving the earth, but Herald, Spitfire, GT6 and
TR bodies responded most encouragingly to this type of persuasion.

Wrap an attachment arm in an old towel for protection and put it in a vise.
They will bend, may not exactly as you intended, but they will bend. With
trial and error and patience, I got a good fit.

I agree, although for my TR250, I went for a shock tower conversion.
For both TR3s, though, I drained the oil and replaced wit with motorcycle
fork oil and it worked well.

Ditto. When I sent mine off I told him I needed them back before Xmas
(Present for the wife - Hey! It is her car!) and lo and behold they arrived

Why is it that when journalists start writing about BMW and how it disposed of
Rover Group companies, they usually get some or all of what they're writing
about, either back to front and/or wrong. For heavens sake, if you're going to
write sometime for public consumption, why not amaze everyone and get your
facts right! Where was Jaguar in that woffle and MG wasn't sold by BMW to the
Chinese. That happened more than five years after BMW had left the scene when
Rover was finally broken up. I saw a report in a paper a few weeks ago where
the correspondent stated Land Rover had sold Ford! Too much like the auto
history lessons according to that plonker called Clarkson.
But does it really
matter? Sells papers, magazines and banal TV programmes, I suppose.
