Don't bother.  It's only a small amount and what is in there has been
circulating through your engine all the time it has been running
presumably not doing any harm.  With fresh oil in the crankcase you
won't know it is there.

The only exception might be if the oil has been contaminated in which
case the best thing would be to remove it and the hoses and flush them.
You would have to do that with the engine anyway.

For a regularly driven MG, just change the oil & filter. Yes, there will be
a small quantity in the oil cooler (I suspect less than a quart but I
haven't measured it) but with regular oil changes it'll be fine.

If there has been a catastrophic event (blown engine) don't bother trying
to flush out the oil cooler - just install a new one with the new/rebuilt
engine.

If one is resurrecting a long dormant engine you might try using a rubber
tip blow gun to remove as much old oil as possible. Or just plan to do an
early oil change.

I have a 1973 MGB.=C2=A0 Other than drill and tapping the oil cooler with =
a drain plug, how can you easily drain out the quart or so of old oil from =
the oil cooler during a oil change?
Thanks

Don't bother.=C2=A0 It's only a small amount and what is in there has been =

The only exception might be if the oil has been contaminated in which case =

You would also have to drill a hole in the front apron, for the tap to =
go through. And it would have to be large enough for the whole tap unit =
and handle if you want to be able to move the cooler without removing =
the tap and draining it.

IMO, it is something that has not been a problem for the last 50-60 =
years, so I wouldn=E2=80=99t waste any time trying to solve it. The oil =
will get =E2=80=9Cdirty looking=E2=80=9D soon enough, anyway.

I might add that the thin aluminum shell of the cooler does not seem =

have no access to the inside for a nut. It seems likely it would just =
create a permanent leak.

Even without a cooler, there will always be some oil left in the engine in
the various nooks and crannies, adhered to the rough textures, etc., but it
is oil that ultimately will mix and virtually "disappear" in the volume of
new oil coming in. You are putting in all new fresh additives, etc., and
the bit of oil that remains simply is inconsequential.

I unbolt the oil cooler from the body and hang it from the hood latch while the rest of it drains.

I have a 1973 MGB. Other than drill and tapping the oil cooler with a drain plug, how can you easily drain out the quart or so of old oil from the oil cooler during a oil change?

Thanks

Joel Martin

They were never tapped for a drain plug because they don't need it.
Unlike rad and fuel tank which were originally then deleted to save money.

Hot draining should clear more muck then cold.  My roadster (leaving
what's in the cooler, hoses etc.) starts off clean but then gradually
gets browner,  I've seen them classed as a 'dirty' engine.  If you have
blow-by it'll probably be worse.  My V8 came out pretty clean but then I
used to treat it to an engine flush every other change putting it in a
hot engine and running it for a few minutes before draining when it came
out black.  You could try a flush, but then that can dislodge old muck
which circulates and causes other problems.

Just do regular oil and filter changes, using good quality products, and
enjoy driving it.
