Hello all, Two questions tonight. 1. When I wander around the local muscle car shows in Carolina, there's always someone selling a "miracle" paint, that you can supposedly brush on and it is supposedly extremely resistant to rust, protects the underside of cars, etc. As I work on replacing the suspension on my TR7, I thought I would clean off the underside and paint it with something protective. There's a lot of surface rust under the car. So, anyone got a product that can be applied to a "wire-brush clean" surface, doesn't need any special handling, and doesn't need to be coated with a top coat? 2. I have a 1/8 pinhole I need to fill, and I wondered if I could use my favorite epoxy, J&B Weld? Anyone filled sheet-metal holes with it, and can it be painted afterwards? As always, thanks! Bruce, Regarding your first question - I am no expert, but I think nothing beats good preparation and top quality automotive paint. I am always wary of any "miracle" product! I remember well all the hype for "miracle" underside coatings in England in the mid to late 70's and early 80's... I used such a coating (can't remember the name- started with an S or Z?)) on my fist Sprite- and lived to regret it. No matter how well you prepare the surface, eventually the covering will crack or split, water will get between the coating and the metal... the coating will keep the water trapped... and the metal will rust. Even worse, because the coating looked so good outside, I did not find out till quite a bit of damage was done. Promised myself never to do that again.... not that I would need it here in So Cal anyways! 8-) Jacques Le Clainche, 1959 bugeye with rust free and original body. -----Original Message----- From: owner-british-cars@autox.team.net [mailto:owner-british-cars@autox.team.net]On Behalf Of Eganb@aol.com Sent: Sunday, May 05, 2002 5:38 PM To: Triumphs@autox.team.net; british-cars@autox.team.net; tr8@mercury.lcs.mit.edu Subject: Paint for TR7 undersides? The POR 15 products have gotten a lot of hype for it's durability and ability to apply directly on rust (but not scale). My experience with it has been very limited. On my Ford restoration, I used the POR 15 on the inner box sections of the cars sills. while I had the ends of the sills open , I used a multi-sponge glass washer gadget attached to a wooded dowel, the sponge saturated in POR 15, and coated the internal parts of the sill. That is the only area that I used the product. Which was in 1996-96. It's unfair to comment on how it is holding up, because the car still sits in the garage waiting completion of this restoration and has not been exposed to the elements, YET! Permatex Extend (used to be Duro Extend) is a lot different than the old phosphoric acid "Naval Jelly". It has some sort of catalytic reaction with the rust, and in fact will not turn black if the surface is completely free of rust. One of the hazards of using the liquid is that if you stick a brush back into the bottle after brushing it on the surface, it may contaminate the bottle with already catalyzed liquid, which will eventually convert the entire bottle. I've been using a very similar product called Klean-Strip Rust Converter. It's main advantage is that it's available at Wal-Mart (with the Bondo and whatnot). Just a few comments. Phosphoric acid isn't a rust converter, at least not in the sense described below. Phosphoric acid, and in fact most acids, will actually remove rust. The acid reacts with the oxygen in the oxide and frees it. If you check the ingredients of products that remove rust, like Metalprep and Naval Jelly, you'll find that they contain phosphoric acid. Phosphoric acid also has a secondary reaction which leaves a coating of iron phosphate on the surface. Remember the old legend about Coca Cola being a good rust remover? Check the ingredients next time you have a Coke! The advantages of phosphoric acid are 1) The reaction with the rust is much slower than its reaction with the surrounding iron (which it also eats). 2) it leaves a paint friendly coating of iron phosphate behind. It also has some disadvantages. 1) The reaction is very slow, so unless the surface has only light rust, some will remain under the coating. 2) Phosphoric acid isn't solder or weld friendly, so if you plan do do either, do them first if, possible. You can use other types of acids for quicker rust removal. e.g. HCl. The big problems with HCl are 1) It's highly corrosive, so its hard to work with. You'll need face and body protection. 2) It releases chlorine gas which not only smells bad, but is also highly corrosive. Chlorine gas is a very strong oxidizer, so any iron based metals in the vicinity will rust almost instantly. This goes for the surface being treated, BTW, so instant cleaning and painting is necessary. The chlorine reaction is somewhat similar to rust caused by road salt, which also contains chlorine. 3) Its reaction with the surrounding metal (i.e. etching) is about as fast as it is on the oxide. In short, I don't recommend HCl for this purpose, except under very restricted circumstances. I don't think the underside of a car is such a circumstance. A wire brush is probably the best approach here, and phosphoric acid, or something similar afterwards. However, don't use acid on suspension parts, springs, etc. because the acid treatment will weaken them due to hydrogen embrittlement. I've used so called rust converters, but haven't been very impressed. If you scape the "converted" coating off, generally you'll find rust underneath. It only seems to work on the top most layer, so you'll likely have to remove all visible rust before applying it to get the results claimed. I've also used POR15, but mainly in place of regular paint. It hasn't been on long enough for me to make a judgement call yet, though. I do like the fact that it seems to flow into a smooth coat when applied with a brush or one of those sponge applicators to form a nice even surface. I put a couple layers of plastic rap under the lids and store them in the 'frig. I've got some that's over a year old and still slushes around. Another nice thing about canning jars is that you can see that the paint inside is still liquid. I faded in and out myself, as activity on my own car waxed and waned. This spring I got busy with my car again (it's finally registered in Illinois) and began paying closer attention to the daily mailings. I found I was overwhelmed by stuff that I was, quite frankly, not interested in. Stuff for other types of Triumphs. Stuff for the occasional Triumph motorcycle. Little itty bitty Triumphs into which I could never fit my big toe into. And ads. Ads and more ads. Did I mention there were a lot of ads? I put on my thinking cap and came up with, not one, not two, but seven (yes, seven!) separate mailing lists to hopefully appeal to the whims of this discerning and august crowd and reduce the size of the daily mailing to something that could be easily skimmed. If anything else, it keeps a crude uniform color to all parts of the car that aren't really noticeable (well, the engine is, I suppose). It repels grease and tar rather nicely, so a good spray will get all that off. Fred, Yes, I've found many sites also, but many of them don't have the info we might be looking for. The old site was quite good. I have some of the tables from the defunct site. Californians, please read! Thanks... Keleigh ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Save a Car From Scrappage Want to save a vehicle from being crushed into a cube, salvageable parts and all? You can, thanks to a new California Air Resources Board (CARB) Email notification program. You can sign up online to be notified before a car or truck gets scrapped, so you can either buy the entire vehicle or buy parts off it before it's destroyed. The new Email program not only notifies interested parties of a vehicle's potential scrappage free of charge, it also provides a substantial waiting period before the vehicle's destruction. If you submit a request to see a scrapped vehicle, the period until the vehicle's destruction can be extended by as much as one week. Previously, cars and trucks could be destroyed as soon as they were inspected and the necessary paperwork was processed, precluding any vehicle rescue or parts sales. "This automatic Email notification system represents a significant opportunity to hobbyists looking for specific vehicles and parts," said Frank Bohanan, a technical consultant to SEMA. "When combined with SEMA's success in limiting the types of parts which must be destroyed under these programs, this advance notice about vehicles destined for scrappage will help improve the availability of unique parts which would have otherwise been lost forever." The CARB Email program will automatically send a list of vehicles' make, model and year to interested parties, whenever a vehicle is scheduled to be received at a dismantler's facility. The Email message will include the dismantler's location, as well as the time when the vehicle is scheduled to arrive at the dismantler. To subscribe to this Email notification program, go to: www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/avrp/emailnotification.htm We urge you to sign up today, so you can save a vehicle on death row--or obtain much-needed parts for your restoration, street rod or other project. ---------------- John T. For example, is this sluggishness just at low RPM? Does the motor run smoothly, or does it miss when accelerating and/or at steady speeds. Lots of electrical problems can cause this. As TJ points out, bad plug wires, for example. Find a darkened area, like inside your garage and check for arcing. Another problem I've seen with plug wires is salt coating from driving on salted roads during the winter. Or the internal resistance may have changed, due to aging. I don't know what kind of ignition system a '73 GT6 has, but check the distributor connections. Older cars with points can have this sort problem if the points are worn or mis-gapped, though I'm guessing your car has some type of electronic ignition. Another source of problems with a points system is the capacitor- either being faulty or having a bad connection. If you have an electric tach and notice a lot of needle flickering, a bad capacitor or a bad connection to it can cause this. With electronic ignition systems, sometimes re-soldering all of the connections will help. Check the coil. I hesitate to suggest removing a plug wire and checking to see if you are getting a good steady spark, because that can damage both the wire's insulation and the coil. A better way is to borrow a coil from another car and see if that makes a difference. A faulty fuel pump can cause sluggishness too, but this should be noticeable when accelerating at higher speeds too. Of course, it could also be a clutch problem. I'm assuming you're not noticing any slippage (engine RPM serging) when engaging the clutch or during moderate acceleration? The Mog was not much of a hit with most of the Rodsters though... Mostly what they wanted to talk about was what size V-8 would fit in there! Then I took it for new tires a few days ago. God! What an improvement! The 10 year old bias ply tires looked good, lots of tread, but musta been hard as rocks. I ran it up to 80 mph (mas a menos) on the way home and pronounced it good... (With the old tires 50 was like a visit to the chiropractor's.) Then, two days ago, I took it on a foray to the Dentist's, then on to my annual pre-anniversary pilgrimage to Dillard's. I bought Yellow for my wife in honor of our 15th wedding anniversary which was 22 years ago. So, on the 22nd we drove Yellow to town where she insisted on buying me lunch. And in all this running around I've seen not one other LBC... Looks like I gotta buy a Color Tune, though, as Yellow must be running lean... No matter how many miles I run I have to use mucho chokeo to restart after a brief shut-down. The cheap coolant recovery system I added last fall has been much tested and works very well. Indeed, I think I will be justified to trade up to a better looking system. By-the-bye, I have 7 copies of THE BULLETIN, the Morgan Three Wheeler Club (in Blighty) newsletter, dated in 1996. Dear Listers, I am once again going to the lists for some help and ideas for my Triumph TR7/8 buyer's guide for British Car Magazine. This is what I'm looking for: Good Points - why should someone want to have a TR7, what is its appeal?? WE know that the TR8 is more in demand because of the V8 performance but what else appeals to buyers?? Bad Points - What are these car's weakness areas?? - what should potential buyers be wary of?? Any tips for finding a good one other than "bring more money?" How Cheap is Cheap?? What are complete, running, restorable cars worth?? - You know, driving restoration projects. Are TR7 coupes only good for trading in for a small cheque and polution credits??? Will any rational person actually try to restore one?? How about TR7 roadsters?? What do we know about modified TR7s?? I've recently talked to owners who are fitting everything from Rover V8s to twin turbo Nissan 300Z V6s and getting them through CA smog tests. One guy has fitted a Toyota 1600 twin-cam and 5-speed - Is the rest of the car worth the bother. My personal experience was extended use of a friend's TR8 a number of years ago when the car was fairly new - I liked the car as a driver and had no trouble with it but never warmed up to its looks - though it was plain at worst. What do you think??? The majority of British Cars that I've seen are late model Jags and Range/Land Rovers driven by people who barly know that these cars are British. I drove by comedian, Bob Nelson's red Pickup on Ocean Ave and saw the girl from the Marina in her orange, chrome bumper Midget that she drives daily but nothing unusual . . . . . . Then last night on the way to Shushi, we were driving up Main St, Venice when I saw an odd British saloon looking profile parked across the street - as we approached, IT WAS A JOWETT JAVELIN!!!!! I pull over and pop the bonnet. fuel is leaking from every hose and hose clamp and I have a bunch cause I'm running twin SUs and both a chrome & glass fuel filter and an adjustable pressure regulator from the speed shop. Chevy technology that has somehow overlapped into the Minor. I drive over to Peter's Marina Motors and leak all over his forecourt. It seem that the MTBE fuel additive that the law demands here in CA has eaten up all of my hoses. Pete says to ashcan the regulator as we just put in one of those Moss solid state, original looking pumps a few months ago and he says that it puts out the proper pressure. He gives me some German fuel line that he says won't disolve in MTBE and a knife. We are on the road in a short time, car is running fine. I thought I would cheat a bit on my British car sightings as Peter's place is usually full of Britiron. This time it was mostly Land Rovers as Pete was preparing a few for a safari film that is being shot this month. He also has a Sunbeam Talbot/Alpine getting a super quality restoration and an XK140 Jag Roadster on the lift. Back on the street I see a pretty blond girl in a BRG, rubber bumper MGB getting a ticket from a bike Cop - what a drag! And on British Car Week! Over on Venice Blvd, in front of the library, I spy two more - a red Jag XK150 drophead coupe (stock looking but with a Ford V8/4-speed) and a silver Jag XJS cabriolet with the removable "targa top" panel removed but the folding rear portion in place. Also on Venice Blvd, a white Daimler Limo out in front of a Public Storage facility. That's it! Nothing more Rick Feibusch reporting from the beach area of Los Angeles. ************************************************************* A collection of Prince of Darkness jokes: Lucas denies having invented darkness. "I've had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never experienced any prob... Did you hear about the Lucas powered torpedo? It sank. It's not true that Lucas, in 1947, tried to get Parliament to repeal Ohm's Law. They withdrew their efforts when they met too much resistance. Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into a Land Rover and asked the owner "How can you tell one switch from another at night, since they all look the same?" "He replied, it doesn't matter which one you use, nothing happens!" Back in the '70s Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners. It was the only product they offered which didn't suck. Quality Assurance phoned and advised the Engineering guy that they had trouble with his design shorting out. So he made the wires longer. Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone. Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb. Joseph Lucas invented the Short Circuit.
