help with rally

I'm on a committee planning an international rally that will take place
in the US next summer. What have you liked/disliked about rallies you've
been on. What makes a good rally? Or a bad one?
Suggestions for awards and gifts for the attendees (hats, shirts,
badges, etc.).
Any input or ideas appreciated.
